What is the Winter Energy Payment?

The Winter Energy Payment is an extra payment provided to those eligible to help with the cost of home heating during the cooler months of the year. It is a non-taxable amount paid from May – October. To find current Winter Energy Payment rates, visit the Work and Income website.

There is no need to apply – the Winter Energy Payment is paid automatically to those who receive NZ Super and Veteran’s Pension, and other benefits (including the Supported Living Payment and Emergency Benefit).Receiving the Winter Energy Payment doesn’t affect any other payments or benefits you might receive.

People who get a Residential Care Subsidy or Residential Support Subsidy are not eligible to receive the Winter Energy Payment.
