I don’t own a driver’s licence. How can I prove my identity?

The Kiwi Access Card (previously known as the 18+ card) is a Government recognised form of photographic ID that can be used as evidence of age and identity throughout New Zealand. If you don’t have a passport or a driver’s licence, it’s a good alternative if you need proof of identity. It’s available to both NZ nationals and foreign visitors, and is valid for 10 years.

How do I apply?

You can apply online through the Kiwi Access website, or pick up an application form at your local NZ Post or AA Centre.

You will need:

  • Two identical, passport-sized colour photos of yourself, taken within the last 12 months.
  • Proof of the address you want your card delivered to (e.g., a statement, letter, or bill. It doesn’t need to have your name on it).
  • An original photo ID (current or expired within the last 2 years).
  • If you don’t have one of these, you can still apply, you just need someone who can verify your identity (someone who has known you for 12 months, isn’t a partner or related to you, does not live at the same address as you, and has a current form of ID), and another form of identification, like your original birth certificate.

The card costs $60, and can take up to 20 working days to be delivered from the date you apply.

If you don’t have another form of official Government-recognised ID, it gives you the freedom you need to access goods and services throughout NZ. For instance, major banks accept the Kiwi Access Card, and you can use it to apply for a driver’s licence or RealMe identity.
