Testimonials
26/2/24 We have had our Mum as a resident at Oceanview for the past 2 years - Ocean view is a lovely homely Rest home that has amazing seaview's which residents & family can enjoy - making it an ideal setting for family visits & on a nice day its a quick stroll across to the beach. Staff & management are caring, friendly & approachable and all take a hands on approach to ensure that residents needs are met. Thanks again for all the care, support & patience over the last 2 years. Cheers C & T 10/10/2023 My Mum, a recent resident of Ocean View Residential Care in Otaki, passed away earlier this year. The team at Ocean View made the last phase of Mum’s life as pleasant as possible. The care, dignity and warmth they showed her, ensured Mum enjoyed the best quality of life possible. After previously living alone where she sometimes felt bored and lonely, at Ocean View, Mum was able to enjoy the company of others and to be able to withdraw to her own private room with beautiful views of the beach and sunsets across the ocean. She particularly loved mealtimes at Ocean View, where residents would chat around the dinner table. A highlight for her was the weekly Sunday roast. I always appreciated the willingness of the Ocean View staff to listen and be flexible in response to questions and suggestions from our family. I am glad we chose Ocean View and will always be grateful to its caring team. GK A son's perspective....21/9/21 My mother was a resident at Ōcean View for about two and a half years. As with most people who have to face the reality that they can no longer live independently, she was reluctant but pragmatic. However, she was determined to make the most of it, which she did from day one. The care from Ocean View staff helped her to live her final years comfortably and as happily as was possible considering her age and progressively more difficult lack of mobility. Especially in the final couple of months, she had excellent medical and emotional support that took account of her wishes and her condition. She often said she considered staff her family. As her geographically nearest relative I was a regular visitor and I was always made to feel welcome at any time. The care and attention Mum received was appreciated by all the family. Thank you. Ian Carson Ōtaki A daughter's perspective...27/7/2021 My mum lived at Ocean View Residential for the last four years of her life. Not a long time in her 90 years but a most important time. Mum was extremely ill when she arrived, having been in and out of hospital about four times in six weeks - it was a Christmas I'll never forget! I was relieved when she decided she couldn't cope living alone and being so ill so she asked me to check out Ocean View. She had previously visited here and it was close to where she'd lived independently for almost 20 years. Within weeks Mum had moved in and to be honest the family didn't expect her to see another Christmas. But under the attentive care and regular support she rallied and she got her spark back. From the beginning owner Max said he wanted the place to be homely and welcoming, like a family. And it was. There were ups and downs, as in all families, but I felt I could always approach staff on all levels to discuss anything and I would be listened to, then a solution found. I was informed when I needed to be, but more than that, my needs were catered for too. A friendly greeting, a cuppa, homemade cookies, worries shared and relieved - all this alongside jokes and laughter. Staff became people, not just workers. Despite Mum's vulnerability and willingness to move, once she felt a lot better her transition into care wasn't always easy. Being mentally astute she never lost her mind, just her temper! "Old age isn't for sissies!" she'd exclaim. The nursing staff (especially) were marvelous with her (and me!) explaining and suggesting in an open, professional, yet friendly manner. Mum felt the nurses treated her as an intelligent individual, not just a patient... most of the time! Mum's room became her world where family and friends could come and go easily. Her precious things around her. I'm grateful to all staff for Mum's time at Ocean View as I believe we had extra years with her because of them. It's not an easy job to look after some of the most vulnerable people in our society but Ocean View try to make those days as easy and pleasant as possible. The support, respect and dignity they afforded my mum in her last days, along with the fact I was able to be with her at that precious time, then afterwards take my time to clear out her room, was invaluable and totally unforgettable. To all involved, a heartfelt thank you. Kia kaha Fiona |
