Registered Nurse Yes Our Nurse Manager is on site from 8:00am-5:00pm Monday to Friday. We also have immediate access to an on call Registered Nurse 24 hrs/day from our adjoining Birchleigh Hospital unit. In addition, our Nurse Manager is also available on call as required.
Nurse Practitioner Negotiable We have access to a Nurse Practitioner Monday to Friday through District Health Board Mental Health Services Older People's Health. They are available as required for Consults, Reviews and Support.
Physiotherapist Negotiable A Physiotherapist is available through the District Health Board Community Services Team.
Occupational Therapist Negotiable An Occupational Therapist is available through the District Health Board Community Services Team.
Social Worker (on site) Negotiable We have access to a Social Worker through the District Health Board Older People's Health Service based on the resident's Needs Assessment.
Diversional Therapist Yes See Activities Co-ordinator below.
Activities Co-ordinator Yes Our Activities Co-ordinator is a trained Diversional Therapist. She is available for 7 hours a day, 5 days per week and offers group and one-to-one activities, concerts, outings, and arranges visiting entertainers and guests.
Hairdresser Yes Our on-site Hairdresser is available Tuesday to Friday. Residents pay for this service, but Birchleigh covers all the overhead costs of this service to ensure pricing is kept at a very reasonable level.
Podiatrist Yes An independent Podiatrist pays regular six-weekly visits to Birchleigh to treat residents requiring assistance with foot problems. Podiatry consultation costs are on-charged where applicable.
Dietitian Negotiable A Dietitian is available through the District Health Board Community Services Team.
Accredited Visitors Negotiable Appropriate volunteers are welcomed at Birchleigh.
Kaumatua Negotiable Visits by Kaumatua can be arranged as required.
Chaplain/Spiritual Advisor Yes We offer frequent inter-denominational services provided by our Chaplain and other church groups. Our Chaplain is also available to meet the specific support needs of individual residents.
Other Personnel Yes Birchleigh's Reception area is staffed 7 days per week from 9:00am to 3:00pm Birchleigh also offers a supportive, trained escort to assist residents who need to be taken to any specialist appointment. We also provide a vehicle for this purpose.

Single Rooms Yes 24 rooms have full ensuites. 9 rooms have shared ensuites. Most rooms offer sufficient space for personal furniture and other belongings.

Alcohol Permitted Yes We have a happy hour once each week where residences can consume alcohol under supervision. With appropriate approval, some residents are also able to have independent alcohol supplies.
Pets In Residence Yes We have three cats that appear to be convinced the entire Birchleigh complex was built as their home. But our residents love them - so we let the cats continue to believe that our residents are there for their pleasure.
Negotiate To Bring Own Pet Yes To ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, each situation would need to be discussed before a pet was brought on-site.
Phone Access In Own Room Yes We are able to take our portable facility phone to any room for incoming calls. Alternatively, at an extra cost, each resident can have a dedicated personal phone line to their room.
Resident can adjust heating in own room No A range of heating sources is used, including underfloor and heat pumps. Our Domestic Services Manager controls the temperature in each area as requested by the Nurse Manager.
Lounges/seating areas Yes We have one large lounge with an outlook and access onto a sunny courtyard area. A smaller lounge looks out onto a pleasant garden setting, and we have small nook, also with a very pleasant outlook.
Palliative Care Contract No We will admit residents who require Palliative Care, but this is not on a separate contract with the District Health Board.
Day Programme for day stay clients Yes We are able to offer respite support for a limited number of day residents from 9:00am-4:00pm. This service is often used by residents of Chatsford - the retirement community that adjoins Birchleigh.
Outings Yes We have two minibuses and we offer regular excursions to local beaches and other sites of special interest under the constant supervision of our Activities Coordinators and caregivers.
Whānau Room Yes The adjoining Birchleigh Hospital offers a well equipped Whanau Room.
Māori Kaupapa Yes We have links to the local Maori community and will make contact as required to ensure we meet the individual needs of each resident.
Residents Committee No We have no formal Residents Committee, but we do hold monthly Resident Meetings to allow residents and their families to discuss any issues.
Family Committee No We have no formal Family Committee, but family members are welcome to take part in Resident Meetings. We also encourage an informal support network among resident's families.
Newsletter Yes We produce a regular newsletter to keep residents and their families up-to-date on what is happening in and around Birchleigh, including photos of activities, major resident milestones, and staff updates.
Policy for management of challenging behaviour Yes Our policy requires incidents of challenging behaviour to be documented and referred to an RN who can then refer this to the appropriate specialist if required. All staff are required to show competence in this area by completing regular questionnaires.
Confused Residents Yes We will check for any physical causes leading to confusion. We provide supervision to prevent residents wandering, with prompt reporting policies in place.
Rural Setting Yes Birchleigh is situated on the outskirts of Mosgiel and offers views of rolling hills and farmland.

Birchleigh's Rest Home Unit is known as "Silverstream" which a reference to the area of the Taieri Plains it looks out on. The unit is surrounded by a restful garden. We are some distance from any major roads or industrial sites, so the unit offers a very quiet and peaceful setting.

Staffing qualifications and details Birchleigh's Silverstream unit is extremely fortunate to maintain a stable, well-trained team. Our staff have a passion for the work they do and the residents they care for, and they know each resident on a first name basis.
Details about meals A wide variety of nutritious meals are offered at Birchleigh. Individual likes and dietary requirements are catered for, and the menu is revised every six weeks. Fresh fruit is readily available.
Associated Complexes Birchleigh's Silverstream Rest Home unit is part of the overall Birchleigh Residential Care Facility, which also includes the Braeside Hospital unit and Janefield Demetia Care unit. Birchleigh sits alongside Chatsford - The Lifestyle Choice, a modern resort-style retirement community comprising 165 town houses and 70 apartments.

Public Transport 0.10 Km A local "loop" bus service stops right next to the main entrance to Birchleigh. A daily bus service is also available to and from Dunedin City.
Shops 1.50 Km Mosgiel township is approximately 1.5 km from the Birchleigh facility. Mosgiel sits at the northern end of the Taieri Plains, so the terrain is entirely flat.
Mall 17.00 Km Dunedin's main shopping centre is approximately 17 km from Mosgiel. A large proportion of this is motorway driving on SH1. The time to travel from Mosgiel to Dunedin is approximately 20 minutes.
Parks 2.00 Km There are a number of parks around Mosgiel, the closest of which are approximately 2.0 km from Birchleigh.
Library 1.50 Km Birchleigh maintains a small library of books for resident use. There is also a public library in Mosgiel township.
