The Disabilities Resource Centre is a dedicated and forward-thinking organisation committed to empowering individuals to achieve their goals through exceptional health and disability services.

Recognising the importance of independence and dignity, we have been providing top-notch Home Care Services since 1989, enabling our clients to remain in the comfort of their own homes and enhancing their overall quality of life. With offices in Whakatāne and Tauranga, we serve the Western Bay and Eastern Bay of Plenty regions, extending from Katikati to Whangaparaoa to Ruatāhuna.

We can help you with:

• Home Care – Personal care or home help support in your own home. Our friendly Support Workers are trained to provide safe, dignified and culturally appropriate care, giving you and your family peace of mind.
• Community Services - Supported Independent Living and Vocational.
• Information - We are a one-stop shop for disability information, with knowledge and resources about all thing’s disability in one place. Need to know how to get a mobility parking card? If your parents are entitled to free Home Care? Which support groups are available in the community? We can point you in the right direction.
• Specialist Field Officers - Brain Injury Liaison Officer, Post-Polio Liaison Officer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Liaison Officer and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
• Total Mobility Agency – people with limited mobility who cannot catch a bus may be eligible for discounted taxi fares. Our staff are trained Total Mobility assessors - make your appointment by phoning 0800 227 363 or 07 307 1447.

Home Care Services
Personal Care - Assistance with personal hygiene and the range of tasks required supporting daily living. The specific tasks will be agreed with the client. Services may include but are not limited to: assistance with eating, dressing and undressing or personal grooming activities; assistance with bathing including transferring in and out of the shower or bath, washing and drying, hair washing; toileting including assistance with use of appliances and aids such as day/night urinary collection bags and associated hygiene and mobility – ensuring safe mobility around the home.

Household Management - Assistance with tasks normally performed in and around the home. The specific tasks will be agreed with the client. Services may include but are not limited to: washing, drying, ironing and storage of personal and household laundry; routine household cleaning, vacuuming and tidying; meal preparation, shopping for food and spring cleaning by negotiation.

Information Service
Need to know how to get a mobility parking card? If your parents are entitled to free Home Care? Which support groups are available in the community? We have the answers!
Come to us with any question, big or small, because at the Disabilities Resource Centre we are a one-stop-shop for disability information.

COPD Liaison Officer Service
The COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Service is a free service which provides support and advice to people with chronic Asthma and respiratory problems. Our Liaison Officer will work with you to create a plan for how we can help you achieve your goals and manage your health step-by-step.

COPD Support Groups meet once a month in Whakatane, Opotiki and Kawerau, and offer information, advice and support from the Liaison Officer, as well as from others with similar conditions.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation
We also offer a free eight-week Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme, run by a Physiotherapist and designed to lessen the effects of chronic respiratory conditions such as Emphysema and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
By attending two sessions per week, you will be encouraged to learn skills and exercises that you can take home with you and use to help manage your condition, long term. You will also learn about exercise and nutrition, breathing control and lung function, managing medication, dealing with stress and other support available in the community.

Post Polio Service
This is a free service in which our Liaison Officer provides support and information for those who are experiencing the late effects of Polio.
Our services impact is significant, as we assist thousands of individuals annually, continuously working towards enhancing the quality of life for community members.

Brain Injury Liaison Officer Service
The Brain Injury Liaison Officer Service is a free service which provides information and support to people who have had brain injuries.
